Shanghai Tunnels
In the 19th century, Portland became notorious for the dubious practice of "shanghaiing" intoxicated men, essentially kidnapping them for slave labor on merchant ships sailing to foreign lands. These ships often headed for Shanghai, thus the name.

Golden West Hotel
When built in 1906, the Golden West Hotel was the only establishment that welcomed African-Americans. Especially popular were the restaurant, billiards room, ice cream parlor and candy shop.
